Gamzigrad is a very small village located on the district and close to the city Zaječar. At the last census in 2011, this village had 680 inhabitants (compared to 945 in 2002), and this number is still falling. Perhaps its salvation lies in a distant past, unearthed not long ago. Indeed, nearby is the famous Roman site Romuliana (or Felix Romuliana), an ancient castrum with impressive foundations where the emperor Galerius (c. 250-311) was born and buried, and which attracts many tourists. This site has been on the Unesco World Heritage list since 2007 and is being modernized.
