Overlooking the Ibar valley, Stara Pavlica is a small monastery with a strange fate. Built above the Ibar River in the early 12th century, before the time of Stefan Nemanjić, it was then abandoned for a long time. It is a three-aisled basilica of which some 13th-century frescoes remain. The ensemble is tiny; it is even the smallest Serbian monastery, especially since the construction of the railroad, which passes at its feet, destroyed part of it. Now supported by a concrete terrace, it still dominates the valley with a natural grace. Above, on the hill, is Nova Pavlica. Of much more classical construction, it is the work of the nephews of Prince Lazar. It is a monastery of the Morava school; noteworthy is that its narthex was built in 1464, after the fall of the Serbian empire.
