Valjevo, with almost 60,000 inhabitants, is the first stop on the road to Bosnia and Montenegro, and the first town in altitude in Western Serbia. Its natural environment and ancient charm make it a perfect first stop from Belgrade. At 185 m above sea level, Valjevo stretches along the banks of the Kolubara and Gradac rivers, surrounded by the forested mountains of Medvednik, Jablanik, Povlen and Maljen, and is very suitable for hiking, kayaking and caving. Historically, it marked the border between the Serbian and Ottoman worlds and has many monuments from that time.
