Second city of Vojvodina by the number of inhabitants (160,000), Subotica is both an important historical crossroads and a high tourist spot. Populated by Serbs, Hungarians, Jews and multiple minorities such as the Bunjevci or the Slovaks, Subotica is a multi-confessional and multi-ethnic city. Located a few kilometers from the Hungarian border, on the main road linking Europe and the East, it was once a social gathering, a sort of Pannonian Saint-Moritz. At the end of the 19th century, when the city was in the process of transformation, Viennese and Hungarians from Budapest flocked here, attracted by the shady parks, the charming hotels and the lakes. Today, Subotica, the informal capital of the Hungarians of Serbia, is in the heart of a region that offers many tourist attractions.
