ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

This archaeological site is unique in Europe, if not in the world. Discovered in 1927, when a railroad line was to be built there... wars and lack of funds meant that the site was only studied sporadically until 1996, when serious excavations began, which are far from revealing all the site's secrets. No less than eight Neolithic villages have been identified, as well as an advanced mining system and a small metallurgical workshop, which revolutionizes the understanding of the prehistoric period and its transition to the Bonze Age. Recent excavations at the site reveal a prehistoric metropolis with a high level of sophistication and a pronounced taste for art. The unknown tribe on the site from 5400 to 4700 BC lived from trade, crafts, art and metallurgy and, near the settlement, a thermal well could be the remnant of the oldest thermal spa in Europe! The excavations make surprising discoveries: the houses are mostly equipped with stoves, a dedicated space for waste, the dead were buried in a necropolis while the living slept on mats of wool and fur, wore clothes made of wool, linen and leather. The site, extensive, gave its name to the culture of Vinca, the most important in Europe during a long period between 5500 and 4000 BC, on the territories of Bosnia, Serbia and Romania, as well as part of Northern Macedonia.
