In the Dedinje district, a short distance from the city center, the recently reopened estate of the
Karađorđević dynasty covers an area of 100 ha and consists of the English gardens, two majestic buildings, two palaces: the Royal Palace (Kraljevski dvor) and the White Palace (Beli dvor), and the royal chapel dedicated to the Holy Apostle Andrew. This complex was erected in the second half of the 1920s by the Yugoslav king Alexander I and served as the royal residence of the Karađorđević until 1941.
Built in a Serbian-Byzantine style, the royal palace is now the residence of Crown Prince Alexander II and his wife. One can visit the richly decorated marble interiors, library, salons and reception hall. From the palace, a breathtaking view unfolds over the hills of Topčider, Košutnjak and Avala. Erected in 1937, the White Palace, hidden in a magnificent forest, is remarkable for its architectural beauty. Its entrance is adorned with paintings by 17th-century French masters (Poussin and Millet, among others) and Sèvres porcelain can be seen in the rooms. The small and large salon, in the Louis XV style, is decorated with Venetian chandeliers and paintings by Brueghel and Canaletto.
A visit to the royal complex is not to be missed! And if you are lucky, you may even meet the venerable Prince Alexander III and his wife who occupy the premises and speak very good French when meeting visitors.
