EMBASSY OF FRANCE

One of the most beautiful French embassies in the world is located in a place of honor in the heart of Belgrade, facing the Kalemegdan Park and overlooking the imposing Gratitude for France statue that stands in the middle of the French garden. The Embassy enjoys a privileged geographical location which reflects the excellent Franco-Serbian relations after the First World War and their common fight in the Adriatic. Built between 1932 and 1933 by Roger-Henri Expert (also the craftsman of the fountains of the Trocadero), the diplomatic building is of a monumental classicism that is reminiscent of the Soviet architecture of the following decades. Project of high diplomatic flight, the construction site was co-realized by French-Serbian duos: Expert was thus assisted by the Yugoslav Najman, while the French sculptor, Carlo Sarrabezolles will be assisted by Pierre Palavitchini. The facade is divided into five levels: the first two are dedicated to the chancellery while the other three are reserved for the reception rooms and the residence. On either side of the facade, you will find four reliefs, signed Sarrabezolles, celebrating through four characters the history of France: Vercingetorix, Joan of Arc, Louis XIV and a woman, allegory of the Revolution. Unfortunately, the place is not visited, except during the Heritage Days. The building was under construction when we visited in 2022 and we hope that it will be restored to its former glory before long.
