EMBASSY OF FRANCE (FRANCUSKA AMBASADA)
Petit Futé's opinion on EMBASSY OF FRANCE (FRANCUSKA AMBASADA)
One of the most beautiful embassies in France is in the heart of Belgrade. In the face of the Kalemegdan park and the monument «A la France», the embassy enjoys a privileged geographical location. It reflects the excellent Franco-Serb relations of the early twentieth century, during which it was built. Indeed, it was thanks to the French troops in the East Front commissioned by Marshal Franchet of Espèrey that the Serbs could return to Belgrade to the Austrians. After the First World War, France therefore enjoyed considerable sympathy with the Serbs.
If you can't enter the walls of the embassy outside the Heritage days, we invite you to admire its bright white marble facade on which many elements deserve a look. Built between 1932 and 1933, the embassy is the work of the architect Roger-Henri Expert, author of the fountains of Trocadéro, who wanted to introduce monumental classicism reminiscent of the special Parisian buildings of the time. As France at the time wanted the project concerning its embassy to be a Franco-Serb collaboration, Expert was therefore assisted by the Yugoslav architect Najman, while the French sculptor Carlo Sarrabezolles will be by Pierre Palavitchini. The façade of Pariska Street is divided into five levels: the first two are allocated to the Chancery, while the other three are reserved for reception rooms and residence. On both sides of the main façade and on the sides of the building you will find four landforms, signed Sarrabezolles, celebrating four characters in the history of France. Vercingétorix, Jeanne d'Arc, Louis XIV and a woman, Allegory of the Revolution. Finally, overlooking the central rotunda, the three female bronze figures, once golden, proudly embody the motto of the French Republic: Equality, Freedom and Brotherhood.
If you decide to go to the Gračanička side street where access to the residence of France is, you will admire the grid made by the artist Ferronnier Raymond Subes.
