SAINT-SAVA CATHEDRAL (СВЕТОГ ХРАМ ХРАМ)
Petit Futé's opinion on SAINT-SAVA CATHEDRAL (СВЕТОГ ХРАМ ХРАМ)
St. Sava Cathedral, which dominates the city with its sparkling dome, is today the largest Orthodox church in Europe. Adorned with four 44 m high bell towers, overhung by a dome rising 70 m above the ground and extending over an area of 91 by 81 m², the Saint-Sava church impresses by its monumentality and its very Byzantine elegance. Its simple plan in a collected Greek cross and its 18 domes, each surmounted by a three-dimensional golden cross, give it an incomparable majesty. We notice the church perched on the hill of Vračar, visible from 80 km away from wherever we come from! To understand the earthly and spiritual significance of this building, we must go back a long way in Serbian history. On April 27, 1594, Vizier Sinan Pasha ordered the relics of the holy monk Sava resting at the monastery of Mileševa in southern Serbia to be transferred and burned on this hill. On the part of the Ottomans, this gesture of indisputable symbolic significance was intended to signify the definitive opposition of the Turks to the Serbs' attempts at independence. King Alexander died murdered in Marseille before he could attend the first works started in 1935. Then the construction was interrupted due to the German bombardments of 1941, and Tito refused to resume the work started by the king. It was not until the death of the communist dictator that the work was continued from 1985 onwards. An international subscription was launched by the Serbian Orthodox Church, and it was mainly the Serbs of the diaspora who answered the call. Twenty years later, the building is completely finished, but there is still work to be done on its interior decoration. In February 2004, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the creation of the modern Serbian state, the Cathedral of St Sava was inaugurated with great pomp by Patriarch Pavle. The interior is still partially under construction but the renovation of the crypt was completed in 2017. Go down to enter this gilded crypt, a real moment of enchantment and spirituality.
