Like other towns and villages on the coast, Cogoleto claims to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, who was born in one of the houses on the Via Colombo... This fishing village, whose origins date back to the 7th century, has become a seaside resort, appreciated by the Genoese. Five medieval towers and the remains of a fortified castle recall the time of the Saracen invasions. Small alleys connect the central street to the sea; their name, the scali (stages), suggests that they had a practical function for fishermen, certainly as boat shelters.
