National Saint-Floris Park, listed on the list of World Heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 1986, has been in danger since 1997 on the sites at risk. The park, located 800 km from Bangui, is indeed experiencing delicate hours because of the poaching that has multiplied in recent years, and elephants are being exterminated for the ivory trade. Armed and unscrupulous poachers from Chad or Sudan are fiercely defending their hunting grounds. Several Gardes guards died in 2009. The park is accessible by road via Ndélé, but two days of journey is required, under minimum safety conditions as the road» are invading the corner. The mainland borders are also not very safe, owing to the presence of armed groups (including Chadian rebels) and proximity to Darfur. This is really a pity, since several hundred species of birds (ostriches, aigles, vultures, marabouts, pelicans, black, masked grues cranes, Guinea-fir, guinea, multicolores rolliers, etc.) live and make it a treasure for ornithologists. The watercourses are full of crocodiles with also the Mare mare, which houses one of the largest concentrations of hippos in the world…In order to protect its exceptional environment, the reserve houses, on 17 400 km ², all types of vegetation, from dense sèche dry forest through the National and Koumbala rivers (where two camps are implanted). It also has abundant and diverse fauna: giraffes, baboons, green monkeys, colobes monkeys, buffalo, hyenas, warthogs, derby élands, Cobs cobs, Cynomolgus cobs, bubales, antelopes, antelopes, damalisques, pythons, lions, panthers, cheetahs…
