At the junction of the Gaborone-Francistown and Serowe-Sherwood roads, Palapye was originally the capital city of Khama III, before he moved to the nearby village of Serowe. Although larger and more developed than its neighbour Mahalapye, Palapye is not much more attractive. Nevertheless, it has held a significant place in the history of Botswana and is the birthplace of former President Festus Mogae. It is also a source of energy thanks to its coal mine, located in Morupule. There are a few hotels and several supermarkets, bottle stores, petrol stations with their fast food outlets.
