The Central Kalahari Game Reserve, created in 1961, is the largest nature reserve in southern Africa, covering nearly 53,000 km². Together with the Khutse Reserve, its southern extension, and the private concessions that surround them, this area presents, due to its gigantic surface, a rather complete panel of the Kalahari landscapes. The characteristic of this part of the desert is that it is located on fossilized river beds in salt marshes. There are four main rivers, including the famous Deception Valley Pan, which is believed to have been formed 16,000 years ago, as well as Pipers Pans and Sundays Pan. The region is flat, with a few dunes, but the horizon is always clear. We travel across the great grass plains dotted with acacia trees, the dense shrub bush and the fossil valleys with vegetated salt flats. In spring, the vast plains are covered with long grass and colorful flowers attracting hundreds of herbivorous animals in its northern part. All of these provide habitat for a surprisingly abundance of wildlife, despite the aridity of the region. South African giraffes, hyenas, warthogs, cheetahs, wild dogs, leopards, lions, and antelopes are among the park's many species. Today, many San have left the reserve as a result of their struggle with the government, which is seeking to evict them, because the lack of water did not allow them to live properly. There are still a few Bushmen here and there, especially in the Xade section.
