It's a mysterious place, tucked away in a valley between two wooded mountains, at the junction of two rivers. Inside the temple enclosure, the basalt statue of Kali trampling a man is surrounded by Ganesh, the eight Ashta Matrika and a rock evoking Bhairav. A canopy adorned with bronze snakes and tridents completes the decor. On Tuesday and Saturday mornings, sacrifices of male animals, preferably uncastrated and black, are offered to the goddess. Crowds flock to the site, handing over buffalo, goats, pigs, lambs, ducks and chickens for slaughter. It's also the occasion for a family picnic.
