Bungamati is a Newar village, built in the 16th century, perched on a spur overlooking the Bagmati River, 15 minutes by cab from the center of Patan. At its heart, the streets are too narrow for cars and visitors are rare, so you can recharge your batteries in this pedestrian area with its authentic rural vibrancy. In addition to traditional Newar houses with straw bales drying in front of them, Bungamati is home to the temple of Rato Macchendranath, the valley's tutelary god, in its central square. Nearby, the Karya Binayak temple, located between Bungamati and Khokna, depicts Ganesh on a single stone in a superb setting.
