At the foot of the Big Salmon Range, with the Coast Mountains to the west and south, Whitehorse was born after the discovery of gold in the Klondike during the famous gold rush of 1898. To facilitate access to the mines, a railroad was built linking Skagway, Alaska to the territory. After the decline of Dawson City, Whitehorse became the capital of the Yukon Territory in 1950 and then its administrative headquarters. Thousands of visitors stop here before exploring the Yukon wilderness. This city of over 25,000 people is home to a vibrant arts community, activities and colourful festivals.
