The Route des Vikings (430) ends at the edge of this small town (population less than 2,500) which occupies a superb site at the end of a well-sheltered roadstead, framed by dark promontories beaten by the winds and the ocean waves. With an excellent harbour, hospital, shops, accommodations, restaurants, cafes and an airport, it is the closest community to L'Anse aux Meadows (35 km) and the largest urban center in the northwestern region of Newfoundland. The downtown area features ceramic murals by Quebec artist Jordi Bonet at the Grenfell Interpretation Centre.
