While the town's coat of arms - a black snake with a red tongue on a white background - indicates a damp village, the recent discovery of Roman remains proves that Bettlach was prized for its geographical location from the very beginning. The village's origins date back to Gallo-Roman times, when Bettlach was located on a Roman road linking Porrentruy to Basel. Today, the many half-timbered houses add a pleasant, yet closer, touch of Alsace's past. Located along a Roman road that ran through Saint-Blaise, the village was part of Bouxwiller and the Ferrette seigneury in the Middle Ages.
