On the border of both Mexico and New Mexico, El Paso seems to be far from everything. It is the largest "Mexican" city with 650,000 inhabitants, 80% of whom are of Hispanic origin. It feels more like Mexico than the U.S., and if it weren't for the border wall, it almost would be. To get there from Houston, it takes 1,200 km and an hour of time difference. Surrounded by mountains, it seems a bit sad at first sight, with its Mexican bazaars, its military base (the largest in the United States) and its yellowish dust, typical of a desert city. It suffers from the sad reputation of Ciudad Juarez, its twin city on the other side of the Mexican border. However, it has some assets, notably its Spanish missions and its beautiful surroundings, which are popular with lovers of the great outdoors. Plus, you'll find some of the best Mexican restaurants in the country. El Paso is one of the gateways to the beautiful Guadalupe Mountains and Big Bend National Park - but it's still a few hours drive east. It's an opportunity to discover a landscape punctuated by ranches, traditional Texan characters and tumbleweed, the grass that rolls endlessly in Westerns. In addition, you can climb the scenic route, on the mountain to the west, facing Ciudad Juraez. Here you can see a panoramic view of the border, which becomes even more impressive at night.
