Of all the major cities in Texas, Austin probably has the best city bus system. There are over 50 routes in all. Generally, the buses run from 6:30 am to 10 pm, so not an ideal option to get home late at night after a night at the club... Otherwise, during the day, when visiting the city center or elsewhere, it is rather a practical and very cheap option. You can get a week pass that costs only about ten dollars. Buses travel long distances, to the surrounding suburbs.
