The history of Covington's founding remains unclear. Some say that a New York businessman, John Wharton Collins, created the city and named it Town of Wharton after his father. Others believe that it was in honor of General Leonard Covington, a hero of the War of 1812, that the town earned its name. Still, today, it's great to wander through old Covington with its beautiful downtown homes, cute little stores and a few art galleries. The Covington Farmers' Market is also a must, as are the free concerts held on the banks of the Bogue Falaya River from March to October.
