The capital of Príncipe, Santo António is a pretty little town in the bay of San João, and the only one on the island with beautiful architecture, similar to that of São Tomé. The mountains in the background add further charm to this waterfront town. Unfortunately, the old plantations are in an advanced state of degradation, due to the government's lack of resources. The poor populations live in difficult conditions, as the island's economy does not allow for any interesting development. Tourism could be an asset, but current infrastructures are very inadequate.
