Twelve kilometres away, in Ribeira Peixe, there are huge oil palm plantations spread over some 3,000 hectares. The plantations have caused some discontent among the inhabitants, who have gradually seen the forest (and its resources) disappear in favour of these oil palms, replacing the coconut palms that the inhabitants used to collect. By removing the pulp, they are then exported, in large bags, to Portugal, for the manufacture of coconut oil. The coconuts are also exported whole to Angola. At Ribeira Peixe, taking the track on the left 700 m further on, a palm-lined path leads to the sea and you can see seven stones lined up on the horizon. On this track, ask to be taken to the waterfall that comes from an arm of the Rio Grande. If you continue towards Porto Alegre, the road gets worse after Ribeira Peixe. From there on you will have to avoid the numerous potholes. Nevertheless, if the weather is not cloudy, you will have a beautiful view of the Cão Grande, this gigantic sugar loaf which appears at the bend in the road like a surprise of nature. On this route, you will find the best palm wine of the island, sold at the roadside. At 28 kilometers from São Joao dos Angolares, we arrive at the entrance of the landing stage from where the shuttle boat leaves to take passengers to the island of Rolas.
