Continue along the road to the waterfall crossroads. There, children often sell wild "raspberries" in paper cones. These are small berries that look like strawberries and taste like raspberries, a real wild delight that only grows in this part of the island. To be tried without hesitation! In this place, a sign indicates on the left the direction of the botanical garden. After 4 km of track, sometimes paved, sometimes in bad condition, we arrive at the botanical garden of Bom Sucesso. The hikes are practicable by any person in good physical condition. There are no difficult passages. Count 2 hours to go down to the crater of Lago Amélia, 6 hours to reach the roça Bombaim.Classic hike: Lago Amélia (1,465 m above sea level) can be done as a round trip or as a one-way trip to Bombaim, where a bath in the river and a magnificent waterfall reward you for a 4-hour walk. The landscapes and vegetation vary throughout the walk: bamboo, moss, giant begonias, century-old trees, not to mention the remains of ancient dwellings. Several routes are possible: after Bombaim, you can go down into the Rio Grande valley and reach São João dos Angolares, but the landscape is more monotonous. Check with the eco-guides to organize yourself in advance. For the São Tomé peak, a sportive ascent in one day is possible. But it is better to plan two days in order to enjoy the beauty of the site, with a bivouac along the way. This excursion is only possible in the dry season.
