Flamingos, Darwin's finches, pelicans, ducks and hawks make up the flying fauna of this 4.9 km² island, and sea iguanas bask on its dark red sandy beaches whose colour comes from the iron in the rock. In 1971, the National Park Service of Ecuador succeeded in eradicating goats from the island. This species introduced by man has degraded the natural environment and caused the disappearance of some native species such as the gecko, the land iguana. It is a famous diving site where you can see various species of sharks, large manta rays and, of course, the omnipresent sea lions.
