Five kilometers from Antigua, this picturesque town was one of the first to be founded during the colonization period and is home to Guatemala's first episcopal palace - its main attraction today. Like most of the surrounding communities, its inhabitants are primarily farmers. Their speciality is the cultivation of fruits, mainly the medlar - níspero - which has earned San Juan del Obispo the popular nickname of Tierra del Níspero. This activity is so prolific that it has become its main economic engine, favoring the development of local handicrafts, such as the production of wine and jelly made from medlar.
