Originally, this small municipality located at the foot of the Volcán de Agua was inhabited by the Tlaxcaltecas, a Mexican people who allied themselves with the conquistadors. Looking at it today, it is hard to believe that it once had national significance. However, it was the capital of the General Captaincy of Guatemala from 1527 to 1541, before it was swallowed by an avalanche. Now it is a village of farmers of coffee, corn, sugar cane, beans and vegetables, as well as artisans specializing in cotton weaving, basketry and the making of musical instruments and wooden furniture.
