The Malekus, or Guatusos who form one of the smallest ethnic groups of Costa Rica in San Rafel de Guatuso
The Malekus, or Guatusos, number only about 600 and live in 3 villages: El Sol, Margarita and Tonjibe, a space insufficient to their needs. They are one of the smallest ethnic groups in Costa Rica, but they still teach their language, Maleku, along with Spanish. One of the tribe's particularities is the ritual hunting of turtles, which takes place in spring in Caño Negro. It is possible to visit the villages, but the area is not touristy and the locals may be surprised by your visit.
