The underground national park was created in 1974 with the aim of protecting the caves that it shelters, in an area of 2,295 hectares. The Cavernas of Barra Honda would have been dug 60 million years ago in a marine reef. If their discovery is still partial to this day, they present a very good state of conservation, explained by the mildness of the climate and the water. It is a great playground for scientists, but also for sportsmen, who can practice mountaineering, climbing, hiking ... and of course explore the caves, their formations and their rich fauna.
