Located 7 km south of Paquera, this 84 hectare refuge protects thousands of crabs, different species of birds such as the scarlet macaw, the howler monkey and the highly endangered squirrel monkey. Open to the public, it belongs to the Schutt family, who have been in Costa Rica for several generations: the property was officially established in 1933. You can sleep on site, if you wish, in one of the cabinas of the refuge. The owners have converted the place into an ecotourism zone, so be careful not to take any plants or shells and do not disturb the animals. To enjoy the calm waters of Quesara Beach, which are ideal for snorkeling, you will have to take the 4-hour trail of the same name. Eight other hiking trails crisscross the mangroves, forests and plantations: Toledo, Finca de Monos, Ceiba, Cangrejal and Mirador are nice walks of less than a kilometer, easily accessible, where you can see monkeys, turtles, deer, and one of the 115 species of birds that have been identified in these places. The banana plantations are used to feed these animals. For those who really want to stretch their legs and enjoy more of this unique setting with wildlife, continue on the Avispero (2.23 km) and the Killer (3.23 km). To top it all off, don't miss the kayak trip to one of the nearby beaches at the end of the day. The opportunity to admire the incredible phenomenon of bioluminescence: a phenomenal experience!
