The town forms a slight outcrop on the left bank of the Mekong. It's a good starting point for excursions into the surrounding area. Lazily stretching for three or four kilometers, the left bank, fringed with tamarind and teak trees, dominates the river. The town has been relatively preserved in terms of architecture, and there are still some French-speaking inhabitants. The province's population was estimated by Apronuc at 200,000. In the past, Kratie hasn't always been in the same place. When the Siamese devastated the province in 1883, the village of Kratie was located on the opposite bank.
