The town of Pursat lies roughly halfway between Battambang and Kompong Chnang. Taken over by wars over the centuries, Pursat was virtually abandoned when it was reinvested by the French, then rebuilt under the protectorate. Today, the city spreads out on both banks of the Pursat River. A few pretty bridges span the river. Some streets, framed by shady gardens, have a pleasant, provincial air. In Cambodia, Pursat is well known for the marble extracted from the surrounding mountains. There's a sculpture school right in the center, where you can watch the craftsmen at work.
