Created in 1875 following the discovery of rubies in the region, a former Khmer Rouge stronghold, Pailin is a town with a turbulent history. And yet, when one arrives in this modest-sized town, one is pleasantly surprised to discover a delightful green hilly landscape despite all that one had read about the deforestation of the place... The town itself is not a "street town" like Poipet and so many other towns near the border. Its streets are wide and some are paved. The traffic is not anarchic. In short, a peaceful country town nestled in the middle of lush mountains.
