One comes there for the atmosphere. In the past, Sisophon had a bad reputation, but nowadays you can stop over and even find a certain charm. Capital of the province of Banteay Mean Chey, it is located at the intersection of two major roads, the one connecting Siem Reap and the one going to Battambang. There is not much to see, but you can find cheap accommodation before going to visit the temple of Banteay Chhmar, a few kilometers away. Probably more interesting than Poipet, the neighboring border town, but without the western atmosphere of border towns. Some good options for eating as well.
