The city became capital of Cambodia only in 1866, under the reign of Norodom, where a agglomeration developed at the confluence of two rivers - Mekong and Tonlé Sap - branching into «four arms» - Chaktomukh - an ideal location. She was a royal residence until 1494. Then, swinging through history, the royal court entailed a long period of wandering from Angkor to Oudong, through Babaur, Pursat and Lovek, returning again to Phnom Penh in 1813. But it was not until 1866, under King Norodom (crowned in Oudong two years earlier) that the city officially returned to Cambodia's capital. Destroyed and abandoned many times since its creation, Phnom Penh was still a vast swamp when the young king Norodom decided to settle there. Today is a dynamic city.
