the course

Inspired by their experience at the Olympic Games in 1896, several members of the Boston Athletic Association decided to launch their own marathon in 1897. Since then, the Boston Marathon has been held every year, and is now one of the oldest marathons in the world. Although the start and finish lines are changed every year to avoid monotony, the majority of the course follows the original route faithfully. It allows runners to discover Boston and its surroundings, but above all to overlook the city centre for more than 4 km. Every year, the Boston Marathon organization is overwhelmed with requests. The race reached its participation record in 1996 with 35,868 finishers
