Ouahigouya is a large Mossi city of about 120,000 inhabitants, ex-capital of the glorious kingdom of Yatenga. Its importance in traditional power, although less and less influential at the national level, is still very real. From this period, there is not much left, except for a few places and of course the palace of the Naba, descendant of the king of Yatenga. Passing near the palace, one realizes that it is still very active with a crowd of notables waiting at its door for an audience with the king. The region is also known for its beautiful earthen mosques, which the traveller will have the opportunity to see along the tracks. Ouahigouya is now the capital of Yatenga province. This large city is especially for travellers an obligatory stop on the road from Ouagadougou to the Dogon country (Mali). Without being a major tourist destination, Ouahigouya has more to offer than just a stopover. Its large lively central market, its agricultural and craft associations and simply the tranquility of its streets make it a perfect place to discover the daily life of Burkinabe people. Many associations also welcome volunteers.
