Coeur d'Alene is a very pleasant city located on the north shore of the Coeur d'Alene Lake. It is a superb holiday site that also benefits from the proximity of many rivers and another large lake, the Pend Oreille. The name "Coeur d'Alene" originated from the Skitswish native tribe, renamed Coeur d'Alene by the coureurs des bois and other trappers of French Louisiana because of the renowned business sense of these Indians in the fur trade, which pricked the hearts of adventurers like a punch. The city was born in 1877 from General Sherman's decision to establish a military post there; it was officially abandoned in 1901, but the discovery of gold and silver in 1883 in the surrounding mountains had led to the development of the small pioneer town. Today, it is a popular holiday destination, a true paradise for nature lovers; its lake (40 km long by 5 km wide) is considered one of the most beautiful in the world and renowned for salmon and trout fishing. It is also home to the largest colony of fish-eating eagles in the western United States.Don't miss the Julyamsh Pow Wow at the end of July, considered to be the largest outdoor powwow in the Northwest.
