Located on the north shore of the Columbia River, Vancouver is often referred to as the suburb of Portland. Perhaps because some of the inhabitants of the city's African-American Albina neighbourhood were expropriated and relocated here during the Second World War. It is in fact an industrial and commercial city in its own right, occupying a superb site where the presence of the river is essential. Its port is accessible to sea-going vessels. Its main resources are the aluminium, wood and paper industry.Downtown Vancouver is a pleasant place to relax for an afternoon with a concert at Esther Short Park, a view of the Salmon Run Bell Tower and a stroll along the Columbia River where the statue of Lilchee, daughter of a Chinook chief, stands. The Farmers Market brings together, from April to October, nearly one hundred and fifty local product and craft sellers. The Clark County Historical Museum is a museum of Vancouver's history through documents, photos, maps and crafts.
