Forks is known for two reasons. The first one dates back to the 19th century, with the creation of the wood industry. Surrounded by a lush forest, the city lives mainly from trade and logging. Tourists can even visit a sawmill from May to September, thanks to a guided tour organized by the Chamber of Commerce. Forks' other strength is much more recent and is due to the writer Stephenie Meyer. The Connecticut American has chosen Forks as the setting for her Twilight series of books, which will be adapted for cinema from 2008. Since 2005 and the release of the first volume, the city has seen thousands of angry teenage girls arrive to walk in the footsteps of Bella, Edward and Jacob. After the film's release in 2008, the number of visitors rose from 18,736 to 72,000 in 2010 and then dropped to 33,512 in 2014. A Twilight festival is held every year bringing together these new types of pilgrims. It will take place from 12 to 15 September 2019.One hour east of Forks, be sure to visit Hoh Rain Forest, located in the Olympic National Park, one of the peninsula's natural wonders.
