To escape from its state-of-the-art pulp mills and its large port, Tacoma has a pleasant city centre, a leading museum area and an elegant residential suburb. Founded in 1868 on the shores of Start Bay, the city bears the Indian name of Mount Rainier, "Tacobet", which means "Mother of Water". Mount Rainier rises to the southeast.Located 25 km south of Seattle, this city has really succeeded in its conversion, especially on culture. The charm of its downtown with its renovated historic buildings, its ultra-modern congress centre, its tram, public gardens, its large museums and its marina are not indifferent. This mix between history and modern is quite successful, as demonstrated so well by its two world-class museums.Tacoma is known throughout America as the capital of glass, thanks to the artist Dale Chihuly from the city, who imported from Italy the technique of stained glass in the 1960 s. Today, between 800 and 1 000 glass artists work in the region.
