Turning its back on what we call progress, Sark has chosen a certain immobility in order to preserve its traditional face. It remains an exception in the archipelago, much to the surprise of visitors. Sercq has a population of 600, and is administered by a seigneur. There are 2 policemen, a mailbox and a tiny prison. There are no street lights along the island's roads.Night-time traffic is not always easy, but stargazing is all the easier. All the vegetation is very rich. Specialists have observed over 700 species of plant. Their protection is a major concern, as is the preservation of the island's ecological balance in general. Here, distances are short. Just a few steps separate the post office, St Peter's Anglican Church and the main shops. Banks and boutiques are spread along the main street, known as Avenue. Roads are limited to a north-south axis that joins Petit Sercq to Sercq via La Coupée, and a transverse axis on the island of Sercq. Only 5 km separate the northern and southern points. Allow a day to circumnavigate the island.
