Epicenter of Shetland, Lerwick is turned towards the port which makes it live. Herring fishing made it a success as early as the 16th century. It was at this time, during the Anglo-Dutch war of 1652-1654, that its first fortifications were erected. Fort Charlotte replaced them in 1781 and was named after George III's wife. It can now be walked freely. For older stones, the Clickimin Broch is an ancient massive tower of the 17th century BC, to be seen on the edge of the eponymous loch, along the A970, at the southern exit of Lerwick. The local activity remains essentially maritime (fishing and oil).
