South Uist is the second largest island of the Outer Hebrides. Its face is plural, with vast stretches of almost uninterrupted beaches to the west, bordered by small hamlets and colourful flower meadows; and a chaos of rocky meanders to the east, bathed by vast lochs and raised by high hills. The B890 runs alongside the Loch Druidibeg nature reserve and leads to wild ponies at Loch Sgioport. Equally pleasant are those at Loch Eynort and south of Lochboisdale, the main village of South Uist. At the southern tip, Eriskay, another small, beautiful island, is accessible by road. It was here that Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in Scotland in 1745 at the beginning of the Jacobite uprising.
