Like Lewis, Harris is not really an independent island, since it is connected to its neighbor by land. It has fewer historical vestiges than the latter, but the nature here is even more breathtaking. In the north, we find the highest peaks of the Outer Hebrides, which culminate at An Clisham, at 799 m altitude. To the south, and particularly to the west, some of the most beautiful beaches of the region bathe their white sands in turquoise waters, especially near Scarista. The A859 follows this stretch of coastline and a great loop can be made by continuing on the Golden Road to the east, between Leverburgh and Tarbert, the two main villages, both charming and picturesque.
