Lewis is the largest region of the Outer Hebrides, extending over 1,770 km. It is the most populated, with three quarters of the total population and the main town: Stornoway. Its historical heritage is immense, embodied by the standing stones of Callanish and its Iron Age remains. The south of the territory is slightly hilly, full of water and peat, with a rough, jagged, but magnificent coastline, where beautiful cliffs, small creeks and deserted islets follow one another. The north is flatter and quieter, with stunning scenery along its immense beaches and at the Butt of Lewis. Lewis and Harris are sometimes referred to as two different islands, but they are really one.
