Of volcanic origin, Pillars Island is distinguished by its geological formations: basalt organs, underwater caves... Mendelssohn was fascinated by this basalt surface sculpted by rain and waves, and the spectacular Fingal Cave inspired one of his symphonic pieces. It seems that it was the incredible acoustics of the site that inspired him. He was not the only one to be conquered by Staffa: Queen Victoria went there, as did JMW Turner, Sir Walter Scott and William Wordworth. Today it is a nature reserve, where puffins can be seen (in summer), but also dolphins, whales and basking sharks.
