23.5 km long, Lismore watches over the entrance to Loch Lihnne. Its name would mean "big garden" in Gaelic. Its generous land fed up to 1,500 people in the 19th century. Its surface presents broad limestone plateaus where some lochs bathe. There are several prehistoric cairns scattered throughout the area and the remains of an Iron Age fort: Tirefour Castle, on the northeast coast. There are also medieval ruins at Achadun Castle in the south and Castle Coeffin in the northwest, as well as a museum of local history, the Lismore Gaelic Heritage Centre. The main interest of the island lies in this historical heritage and in the walks which offer pleasant views.
