This small archipelago, also called Garvellachs or An Garbh Eilaicha in Gaelic, is located northwest of Scarba. It feels cut off from civilization. Only deer and birds occupy it. Hermits once isolated themselves to seek peace away from the world. There are the stone igloos of the missionary Brendan who founded a monastery in 542 and taught the Scottish kings to read and write. The castle whose ruins can be seen on Don Chonnuil, the last islet in the north of the peninsula, could have belonged to Conal, king of Dalriada. John I, lord of the islands, was imprisoned there in 1365 by MacLean of Duart. It can be reached during the day from Oban.
