Medium-sized compared to its neighbors, Bute is 122 km long. It is a popular place for city dwellers to spend the day or more. This island, like Arran, straddles the geological fault separating the Highlands from the Lowlands. This can be seen in the higher hills to the north, but these do not rise above 278 m (Windy Hill). Rothesay is the main town, a Victorian resort built around its medieval castle, bastion of the Stuart dynasty. The ruins of chapels, such as St. Mary's Chapel and St. Blanes Church, are among the interesting sites. The bays of Ettrick, Kilchattan and Scalpsie will delight lovers of white sand beaches.
