At the western end of the region, on the Rhine of Galloway peninsula, Portpatrick is a small and relaxing coastal town. It can be a good base for exploring the many beaches and cliffs in the area. This is also the start of the Southern Upland Way, a long distance walking trail that continues to Cockburnspath in the Borders. As almost everywhere in Scotland, there are also the ruins of a castle: the Dunskey Castle, dating from the 12th century. It is reached via a short path of 800 m south of the harbor, after the Boardwalk Cafe and Takeaway. You can also go and observe the Kirkmadrine Stones and the remains of St Andrews church.
